Aman has put a date on Novak Djokovic’s second in-person retreat. Three days at Amanjena, twelve kilometres outside Marrakech, with the tennis in the morning and the breathwork after.

The clay court at Amanjena sits against a wall of ivy, at the far end of the gardens. From 18 to 20 December it becomes a classroom. Djokovic will run masterclasses on it as part of Stillness and Strength, a three-day programme Aman has built around him, and the first he has hosted outside the Caribbean.

The inaugural one was at Amanyara, in Turks and Caicos. Aman says it sold well enough to justify a second, and the second has moved continent. Spaces are limited and the resort has not said how limited.

The days

Mornings go to the court. The rest divides between mindfulness, meditation and breathwork, some of it guided by Djokovic, some by Amanjena’s own wellness team. Everyone gets a sixty-minute Beldi hammam and a sixty-minute therapeutic argan massage, and the run of the spa for whatever is left. The menus across the three days are his.

Djokovic has been an Aman global ambassador and wellness advisor for a while now, and his name already sits on two standing programmes at Amanyara, one for mobility and recovery, one for detoxification. Those run with the resort’s practitioners whether he is there or not. December is the version where he turns up.

The place

Amanjena opened in 2000 as Aman’s first property in Africa, drawn by Ed Tuttle in rose-pink pisé with Moorish arches and domed ceilings. The whole plan turns on a central bassin, a long still basin of water that the pavilions and two-storey maisons arrange themselves around. Many have private pools. The name means peaceful paradise.

Olive groves and palms run to the edges of the property, and the High Atlas sits along the horizon behind them. Menara airport is twenty minutes by car. Djemaa el-Fna and the walled medina are a little further in. The Amelkis championship course, twenty-seven holes, is a neighbour.

Most wellness weeks sell sleep. This one sells attention, which is harder to come by.

The Splendid Edit

December

Marrakech in December runs cool and bright. Daytime settles in the high teens, nights want a jacket, and the light stays low enough that an outdoor programme can hold its shape all day. The clay plays slower in the cold. The hammam makes more sense.

Aman is taking registrations of interest rather than bookings, which is the usual signal that the room list will be assembled by hand. Anyone who has tried to buy three days of a Grand Slam champion’s undivided time will recognise the mechanism.
