The World's 50 Best Hotels published numbers 51 to 100 on 1 September. The top fifty waits for a room in Paris on 15 September. Read the extended list with a fashion-month calendar beside it and the cities line up.
Tokyo has five hotels on the list. Janu Tokyo leads them at No. 52, one place behind La Réserve Paris, which tops the extended ranking at 51. Park Hyatt Tokyo follows at 53, a new entry, with The Okura at 69, Palace Hotel Tokyo at 73 and Hoshinoya Tokyo back on the list at 85. Seven Japanese properties in all, once Hotel The Mitsui in Kyoto and the new Waldorf Astoria Osaka are counted.
New York has three. The Fifth Avenue Hotel sits at 78 and takes this year's American Express Travel One To Watch award. Aman New York is at 87. The Greenwich Hotel, Robert De Niro's Tribeca address, closes the city's account at 92. New York Fashion Week opens on 10 September, five days before the Paris ceremony, so the city's three will still be waiting on the top fifty while the shows run.

Paris and London
France places four. La Réserve Paris at the top of the list, the Ritz Paris as a new entry at 72, Carlton Cannes new at 80 and The Maybourne Riviera returning at 93. The Ritz is the name that stands out; the house's Chanel-run spa and the suite Coco Chanel kept for more than thirty years give the judges an obvious fashion footnote. Paris hosts the ceremony at Les Salles du Carrousel, under the Louvre, under two weeks before its own fashion week begins.
London has one entry, Rosewood London, new at 56, in the old Pearl Assurance building on High Holborn. Gleneagles holds the last place at 100. Milan does not appear at all, which leaves Italy's nine entries to the coast and the countryside: Il San Pietro di Positano at 58, Splendido in Portofino at 60, Castiglion del Bosco at 62, Orient Express La Minerva in Rome at 66, and five more between Brixen and Savelletri.
A list of hotels ranked 51 to 100 is the honest one. Nobody lobbies for eighty-seventh.
The Splendid EditThe groups
Aman's family has three names on the list: Janu Tokyo at 52, Amangalla in Galle at 71 and Aman New York at 87. Belmond has three as well. Palacio Nazarenas in Cusco at 54, the only Peruvian hotel on the list; Splendido at 60, the highest in Portofino; and Hotel das Cataratas at 77, the only Brazilian entry. Rosewood, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Capella each place two.
Ten of the fifty are independents, led by Il San Pietro di Positano at 58. Asia holds twenty places, Europe sixteen, North America nine. Eighteen hotels are new to the list and five have returned to it. The votes come from an academy of more than 800 hoteliers, journalists, educators and travellers, each casting seven in order of preference, based on stays in the past three years, with Deloitte auditing the count.
The Crown Building
Aman New York earns its place on the list from the upper floors of the Crown Building at 730 Fifth Avenue, the 1921 tower on the corner of 57th Street. Jean-Michel Gathy planned the interiors around 83 suites, each with a fireplace, and a spa across three floors with a hammam, a banya and the pool pictured above. Arva serves Italian, Nama serves Japanese, and the Jazz Club plays below the garden terrace.
The hotel opened in August 2022, which puts it inside the three-year voting window for the first full cycle this year. Eighty-seventh is a modest debut, and it will be measured against Janu Tokyo, the younger sister brand's first hotel, which arrived on the list thirty-five places higher.
The extended list is published first so the top fifty can be argued over in the fortnight between. This year the argument runs straight through New York's shows and ends in Paris two days before London's shows begin. Somewhere on 15 September a suite in Tokyo will find out where it stands, while its guests are packing for Milan.
