For forty years Aman has built on cliffs, in rice terraces, along canals and inside old cities. It has never built a safari camp. That changes in southern Mozambique.
The reserve is the reason. Karingani runs to 150,000 hectares of open savannah, woodland and seasonal wetland in the south of the country, a stretch of wild land that a small number of guests will soon have largely to themselves. Aman has taken the high ground of it. The lodge sits on a rise, and the plains open out below toward a line of distant mountains.
This is the brand's first safari address anywhere in Africa. Four decades of building resorts, and the continent's bush is the one landscape Aman had left untouched. Karingani is the correction.
The pavilions
There will be thirty of them, standalone, one and two bedrooms each. They anchor into the ground rather than perch above it, low structures with covered decks that run out toward the view. Each has a private pool. Each looks at the horizon and nothing else. The count is deliberate. Thirty rooms across an area this size means the land does most of the talking.
At the centre sits the Lodge, which holds the parts of the camp that want company: an outdoor pool, the restaurants, an Aman Spa. The spa is a fixture of every Aman, and here it faces open country rather than a courtyard or a coast.

The game
Karingani Game Reserve is a working conservation project, a mix of grassland, bush and wetland that shelters a wide spread of wildlife across the seasons. The land shifts as the year turns. Wetlands fill and dry, grass browns and greens, and the animals move with the water. Aman's version of a safari will lean on privacy and space rather than a fixed schedule of drives, which is the way the brand tends to approach everything else.
Mozambique has spent two decades rebuilding its wild south, and reserves like this one are part of that work. A lodge at the top of the market brings the funding that keeps the fences up and the rangers paid. Aman arriving here is a bet that the quiet end of the safari market wants somewhere new to go.

The Splendid EditThe residences
Alongside the lodge comes a set of Aman Residences, three to six bedrooms, set on the same elevated ground with the same long view. They follow the model Aman has rolled out from Tokyo to the Bahamas: a private home inside a working resort, with the service and the setting attached. Here the setting is a game reserve, which is a first for the residence programme too.
No opening date has been fixed. Aman lists Karingani as coming soon and is taking enquiries. For now the reserve is mostly bush and sky, which is more or less the point of it. When the doors open, the arithmetic will still hold: a great deal of Africa, and very few people in it.
It would be Aman's first camp on the continent and its first true bush property. The brand made its name on stillness. A game reserve at dawn may be the most natural setting it has found for it.
