Balenciaga has brought back the City. The bag that hung off every downtown shoulder for the better part of a decade returns as Le City, and it makes its entrance in the back of a New York cab.

The campaign is called A New York Minute. Pierpaolo Piccioli asked Celine Song, fresh from an Oscar nomination for Past Lives, to shoot it. The actor Sarah Pidgeon carries all three films. Each runs exactly sixty seconds, and each was shot on the streets of Manhattan.

The minute

Pidgeon does ordinary things. She picks up dry cleaning. She crosses a packed intersection. She hails a cab and rides home. Then the camera pulls wide and shows the lights, the tape marks on the pavement, the crew standing off to the side. The scene was staged the whole time. Song keeps breaking the frame open, then closing it again.

The premise sits in the title. A minute in New York holds about as much as a Balenciaga bag does. Encounters, movement, noise, a change of mind, all of it pressed into sixty seconds. The city does the work the runway usually does.

The bag

At the centre is Le City. Balenciaga built the original in the early 2000s, all soft folds and moto hardware, and it became the bag a certain kind of woman carried everywhere for years. Piccioli has brought it back in black leather, the slouch and the proportions intact, the name trimmed to two words.

It travels with company. Le 7 Bowling and the Rodeo make up three bags in black leather, moving through the films with her. Around them Pidgeon wears TechWear separates, Jet sneakers, and pumps cut with Manolo Blahnik. The clothes are Fall 26, in stores now.

A bag that spent a decade defining downtown, handed back to the city that made it.

The Splendid Edit

The return

Reissues live or die on timing. The City comes back into a market that has turned toward bags with a history, the ones a customer already knows by shape. Balenciaga is counting on the women who carried it the first time, and on their daughters wanting one of their own.

The films end where they began, on a New York street, a cab pulling away from the kerb. The bag stays in frame a beat longer than the actor. That is the whole idea.
