Fendi has a date. Wednesday, September 23, sits on the Milan calendar, and it belongs to Maria Grazia Chiuri's second ready-to-wear collection since she came back to the house.

The date reads as a small thing until you set it against the year behind it. Chiuri returned to Fendi in October 2025 as chief creative officer, with Silvia Venturini Fendi moved to honorary president. Her first ready-to-wear collection reached Milan in February. Her first couture for the house followed in Rome in July. September is the next act inside a very full twelve months.

The year so far

The February collection carried a motto, "Less I, more us," printed in the house notes as a statement about collective authorship. Black ran through it as a working colour. Tailoring sat beside lace and evening transparency. The Baguette came back in re-editions built for the Fall/Winter 2026-27 season, handled as a live design object rather than an archive relic.

The craft argument sat underneath the clothes. Fendi showed a denim that blended organic cotton with an abaca fibre and framed it inside a wider look at daily wardrobes. The proposition was specific. Material research tied to function, to wear, to the commercial rail rather than a general line about sustainability.

July moved the story to Rome. Chiuri presented sixty-nine couture looks at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, with movement and bodily freedom at the centre. The house described garments that travel with the body. It read as a laboratory. Its ideas can feed back into the ready-to-wear over time.

Rome as method

A Le Monde profile in mid-August set out the working pattern. Chiuri designs from Rome, close to the city she grew up in and the house where her career began. The couture show placed Fendi in conversation with Italian modern and contemporary art. The exhibition programme revisited the label's own history inside a museum setting.

That approach has a precedent in her Dior years, where place, craft and cultural institutions often shaped the story around a collection. Fendi asks for a different vocabulary. Roman pragmatism. Fur and textile workmanship. Sharply engineered bags. A family creative culture that predates any single director.

September's test

Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana runs Milan Fashion Week from 22 to 28 September, and Fendi holds the Wednesday. Vogue files the show among the season's sophomore collections, next to Marni and Gucci. The surprise of a debut has already passed. What remains is coherence across clothing, bags and accessories.

A phrase becomes a house when it can be read in the cut, the casting and the bag, with no caption to explain it.

The Splendid Edit

The open question is whether "Less I, more us" can be seen rather than stated. Collaboration shows up in silhouette, in who walks, in how craft gets credited, in the seam between clothing and accessory. Fendi has released no theme, set, guest list or collection notes for the 23rd. Everything past the date is watching, not preview.

Chiuri has now moved through ready-to-wear, couture and the space between them since her return. September is the point where the separate pieces need to start reading as one house.
