New York's bridal houses have their weekend. The gowns come out from 13 to 15 October, and three separate markets have claimed the same three days.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America runs the official calendar. Its bridal schedule falls on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 13 through 15 October. Designers applied through the CFDA Fashion Calendar over the summer, and the calendar for the week is now set.
Bridal keeps its own season. It runs on a clock apart from the September shows, timed to how far ahead a wedding is planned. A gown chosen this autumn reaches a fitting room next spring and an aisle the year after.
Three doors
The official schedule is one way into the week. Around it, two trade markets have taken the same dates. One Fine Day Bridal Market sets up in the Starrett-Lehigh Building on the far West Side. Union Square Couture runs its New York Luxury Bridal Fashion Week inside the Lotte New York Palace.
The three operate on their own terms. A place on the CFDA calendar does not book a stand at either market, and a stand does not return a calendar slot. A buyer working the full week moves between a runway room, a showroom appointment and a trade floor, sometimes in one afternoon.
The order book
Bridal is a selling week before it is a show week. Buyers arrive with questions about wholesale terms, delivery windows and line sheets. What reads as romance on the runway has to convert into a purchase order before the guests leave.
That gives the calendar a plain job. It tells editors and retailers where to be and when, across a market spread over separate venues and producers. A name in the right timeslot is easier to find, and easier to sell.
The runway lasts an afternoon. The order it takes has to hold until a wedding a year or two out.
The Splendid EditThe week ahead
The confirmed line-up follows once the CFDA publishes it. Until then the shape of the week is clear enough. Three days in the middle of October, several markets running at once, and rooms full of buyers deciding what a bride will want a year from now.
