Two houses will bookend the first days of Milan in September. Both arrive with better numbers than they carried in spring, and with more to prove because of it.

Milan Fashion Week for spring/summer 2027 runs 22 to 28 September. Prada takes the opening slot on the 22nd. Gucci follows on the 25th, with Demna showing his second ready-to-wear collection for the house. The calendar was fixed weeks before either company reported its half-year results. The results have since changed how the two shows will be read.

The numbers

Prada Group published its first half on 30 July. Net revenues reached 3.048 billion euro, up 16 percent, and 5 percent on an organic basis. Retail sales came in at 2.633 billion euro. The figure that matters most sits under the headline: organic retail growth moved from 1 percent in the first quarter to 5 percent in the second. That is momentum, not a single strong month.

The Prada brand tracked the same curve. Retail rose 3.3 percent across the half and 6.3 percent in the second quarter, carried by full-price demand rather than markdowns or a rush of new doors. Full-price sales are the harder kind to win. They point to people buying the current work because they want it, not because it went on sale.

Gucci's turn

Kering reported two days earlier, on 28 July. The group returned to modest comparable growth, up 1 percent across the half and 2 percent in the second quarter. Gucci stayed in negative territory. Its comparable revenue fell 5 percent over the half, though the shape of the fall improved: an 8 percent drop in the first quarter narrowed to 2 percent in the second. Kering called the quarter a marked acceleration for Gucci at retail.

That is a floor, not a recovery. Demna came from Balenciaga with cultural attention and a taste for spectacle. The September collection has to turn that attention into a wardrobe people read as Gucci and buy more than once. A single viral look will not carry it.

Prada has momentum to defend. Gucci has attention to convert. The same week tests opposite problems.

What holds

Prada's task is discipline. A collection that reads as new without unsettling what already sells. Watch for ideas that can travel from the runway into bags, shoes and everyday tailoring without thinning out along the way. The strongest sign will not be one dress. It will be a set of ideas with somewhere to go.

Gucci's task is coherence. Demna needs a language that lasts past the first standing ovation, an archive read through a point of view that a customer can follow from one season to the next. Kering's better quarter buys him time. It does not buy him a finished turnaround.

The financial reports measure what already happened. They cannot call a collection. What they do is set the stakes for the two shows that will frame the week. Prada builds from acceleration. Gucci builds from a decline that stopped getting worse. On 22 and 25 September, both walk out to answer the same question in a different key.
